Like workspace sprawl before it, it accumulates when adoption is easy and lifecycle is absent, leaving tools that are unowned, unreviewed, and of unknown risk. The remedy is a continuous inventory with ownership and periodic review.
AI tool sprawl follows the pattern of every self-service capability before it: easy adoption, no lifecycle, and counts that climb past the point where ad-hoc review keeps up. What is new is that these tools reach data and act on a user’s behalf, so the sprawl is not just messy, it is a widening risk surface.
